Being My Own Boss – Sound Good?

Have you ever thought to yourself I want to be my own boss, or ever wondered “can I be my own boss”? Being my own boss. Doesn’t that sound too good to be true?

In my younger years I really didn’t put much thought into owning my own business. But then again, we didn’t have the internet either. I have had many jobs since. Most of them I really enjoyed and a couple that I hated and didn’t stick with them very long. I’m a firm believer in enjoying the type of work you do.

As I got older and started having children ( still no internet yet ) it was difficult to work and take care of my little ones. I was able to do it, but for others it basically meant trusting a stranger to watch and take care of your little ones while you worked. Luckily I had my mother. And I started a family at a really young age. But the age you start a family is really irrelevant. You always want to make sure your child is safe and is being taken care of the right way.

Along Came The Internet

When the internet became more accessible to the public. It was exciting but It would take you forever to connect to it. Yes, it was dial up. This was exciting, but I still didn’t put much thought into having my own business let alone my own website.

In the present time, WHOA. There are so many jobs that are posted online. Jobs that go by what degree you have, your specialty, the training you have, even no experience needed jobs and the list goes on. You just type what you are looking for and BAM! Hundreds and thousands of job listings right at your finger tips. Of course, you have to sort through the ads. Just have to deal with them, I mean it is the internet. And that is their job with the ads. Place them where they will get seen. Any ways, what about working from home, or be your own boss kind of jobs. There are tons of them as well.

Let The Searching Begin

Thanks to google, searching has been made a lot easier. Most of the time you don’t even have to type in everything. Google will bring up the most popular searches once you start typing in the search bar. The above photo demonstrates this when I chose jobs near me. I live in a rural area with not really many jobs near me. If you are like me, then it will also include surrounding cities in the results. Choose which result you want to explore, you will notice there will be about 4 ads before you get to your actual search results. I don’t even bother with the ads. In the past I found it to be quite aggravating.

Under the ads will be results also show what jobs are available near us, where they are and what employment agency they are listed through. Let’s talk agencies,

Indeed, – This agency is not ranked very well at all. When you first enter the site there are a lot of job openings. However, most of them are actually outdated. Most of the employers are no longer looking or are no longer using Indeed. There are numerous complaints from employers looking for employees and from those searching for a job through them. It is said that indeed sets both sides up for failure. Indeed doesn’t have accurate information, they want you to apply for as many jobs as possible even those that don’t meet your search criteria. When you do type in what type of job you are looking for, you may get one that fits your search but you will also get more of the ones that do not.

Monster– Another well known online employment recruiting service. The reviews for this one were horrible as well. Yet on the same page as the 71 % bad reviews and 18 % excellent reviews there was an ad for using Monster job service. This is what it said, Monster is ranked 24 out of 26 in the category Recruitment.

If you choose to use an online agency, chances are you will have to pay to use their service so you will need to do some research before committing to them. REVIEWS are a must. You want to find out what others are saying about them.

Depending on where you live will determine what is available to you. Regardless of where you live, you are here because you are interested in being your own boss .

Sales – Not Having To Deal With Housing The Product Or Shipping

There are a lot of affiliate marketers that you can sign up with and make money online marketing by selling their products for a commission. There is no door to door selling, no finding and paying for a place to store your products. What more could you ask for? You don’t have to do anything except build a website, promote their products, get traffic to your site, sell their products and make money. Sounds really easy, right? It is easy IF you have experience in this type of business, and already have a website and domain name.

For those just getting started it isn’t hard, but it will take time and commitment. You will need to build a website after you decide on what type of product/company you are most interested in. Get hosting and security for your site as well as a domain name, find the tools and training to build your site and so much more. But don’t worry. All of that plus more is available to you for free. Check out my review on this free platform. You will have everything you need if you are looking to do online marketing or any online business

Take Surveys – Earn Money

Sites that pay you to take surveys seems to be on the rise. WARNING, this can be very time consuming and to me the pay is not worth it.

Swagbucks seems to be very popular. You search for everything on the web so why not make a little money in doing so, Earn swagbucks by shopping online, playing games and even watching videos. Easy enough? Sound fun? The answer of course is yes. But, like I said this can be very time-consuming. The way this works is you will earn free gift cards and cash (swagbucks) from doing everything you love to do online. Making purchases from any of their affiliate stores, J C Penny, Macy’s, Amazon even Wal-Mart just to name a few, will earn you 1 swag buck for every dollar you spend. This is equal to 1% cash back. There are thousands of stores that you can shop on and earn.

Taking surveys will earn you $1.00 in cash to every 100 swagbucks you earn. When you take an online survey, each survey will have a different payout. Some do offer $50.00 but most offer less and don’t take as much time for you to finish the survey.

Taking surveys has its benefits even outside of getting paid to take them. The information from the surveys will help improve the products and the marketing for them.

MySurvey gives you reward points for every survey you take. Once you have collected a certain amount of points you can then redeem them for items in their reward catalog. The items you can buy with your points range from e-certificates for Amazon to cash.

Know What You Are In For

When you look to the online world to assist you in finding a business to do full/part-time online or a way to make a little extra cash. Be careful. Everything isn’t as it always seems. Being your own boss could have tremendous benefits, but the search to find it could cause you a lot of aggravation and even can cost you financially. Don’t rush into anything until you have the facts. Keep your options open, Search for similar business or for others that are related to what type of opportunity you are looking for. This could help you make the best or cause you to make the worst decision. Please my article on scams in hope to further assist you in not getting scammed during your search.

Lee Ann Cermak-McQuay

I am a family oriented mother and love being involved with my little ones. My husband is the best guy a girl could ask for. I love helping others which is why I created this site. I know what it is like to NEED to work and earn an income, but not be able to do it outside the home. I am now able to help others find work they can do from home. And I love it.

  1. What a pleasure to read a post which provides options to look for work as a self employed person, with appropriate warnings about the types of work involved.

Your advice on Indeed was most timely for me, as I was about to check them out, you have saved me a lot of time.

I think the thing that we all need to do is to find the work that suits our particular likes and dislikes, you are encouraging us to do this in this post.

Thank you for your reviews and I will your other posts in due course.

    • Thank you for your kind words and for reading my post. The internet can help us get what we are looking for, but can also stop us from finding it as well. Meaning some of the less honest sites that are online with false pretenses. I wish you the best of luck in all you search for.
      Take Care

  2. Great information Lee Ann…I’m sure now I won’t be trying to make money through Swagbucks…I was once involved in MLM (Multi Level Marketing) just in case you’re wondering…this was way back when the Internet didn’t feature much of that sort of thing…unlike now of course. Do you have words of advice on MLM?
    Cheers James

    • Thank you for visiting my site. As for advice, MLM is not something I could do. The amount of time it takes does not match itself with the rewards/pay. As for taking surveys, I have tried it before. The surveys were not matched to my family or lifestyle and often I would get messages that said there were no matching surveys for me.
I don’t have much experience in MLM or any marketing, but I am having much better luck with Affiliate Marketing.
      Thank you,

  3. Hi Lee Ann

There are so many Internet based income opportunities around. It makes sense
to choose something that you got to love doing rather than doing anything just for the money. I know plenty of people who have tried to do things like transcription typing for example and who hated it, even though they were effectively working for themselves at home.

Like yourself, I favor affiliate marketing, purely because you can create a business around your own interests and passions, which makes life a whole lot easier when you have to work hard at it, would you certainly do when you work online.

Sometimes people think working for yourself is the easy way out because you have no boss, and although it’s great having no boss, that does not mean no work. I’ve worked harder working for myself than I ever did for any boss, but the good thing is it didn’t feel like work and I don’t resent doing it because it’s for me.

    • Thank you Mark and absolutely.
I love what I do. I get to help others and work from my home when I want. I work hard to fill my site with material that will help my readers, but I also have the freedom to be with my family and be involved in whatever sports or activities my gils are in to.
I can even sit out on my deck and listen to the birds while I work.
I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I have had offline jobs that I loved and some I hated, But this isn’t just a job, it is my business. What I put into it for my readers gives me the happiness inside, because my readers are what it is about. Helping them is my main concern. Giving them a site safe from scams and not have them eel empty handed when they leave.

  4. Hi Lee Ann,

I love that you mentioned surveys – I don’t understand why so many people love them?! To me it seems like such little reward for SO much effort!

But I completely agree that affiliate marketing is a great option for those who want to be their own boss / work from home. Yes, it can take some hard work when you first start out, but it’s so worth the effort! I love being able to stay home with my kids, work my own hours, and live every day (not just for the weekend!)

    • Thank you Chrissy.
I agree with you 100%. I you want to earn an income you are required to work for it.
Working from home doesn’t change that. There aren’t any programs that will do the work for you.
Having your own business and working from home has so many benefits. The work you put into it
pays you and it makes your business grow. You aren’t putting your time into helping someone else grow their business.
You have flexibility like you stated.
There are so many advantages but you still need to put the work into. Working online from home doesn’t mean we don’t work. It means we WORK for ourselves and when our business is a success, we reap the benefits, not our overhead.
I enjoy working from home as I get to help others without having to leave my home to do it.
I can do it from anywhere as long as there is internet and I absolutely love it. I can go to my daughters track meets or her wrestling matches, her football games, go to girl scout events and still be able to work on my site. Where else would you be able to do that?
